Pushing the Screws is Marseille-based m.j.suinat’s first album – and it’s a poignant conjuration of emo-wounds, experiencing near-psychedelic introspection, along with words of wisdom and bittersweet conclusions.
She sings and plays the guitar in a way that combines melancholy, apprehension and meandering – yet, at the same time, there’s an underlying feeling that things will be alright after all.
It takes several listens to notice all the intricate details distilled within the mix – echoing the conflicting emotions put into song & sound. While the music hits very vulnerable spots, it is far from sounding naive, and rather thickens into abstraction, eerie softness and tension.
The voice plays with its own story, mellows itself, derails… and slowly its presence dwindles into secrets. The questions become contemplative, yet agitated thoughts. Softness thickens, stretches itself into instrumental calls-and-responses, summoning more complexity and catharsis. Some lighter, almost-pop like elements trigger saturated, soaring sounds. What once mirrored genuine solace shifts into trouble, amplified ghosts, distorted by waves of riffs.
Pushing the Screws reenacts sensations one could experience with grunge, art-rock with a shoegaze thread, and folk songs – for ears intrigued by what Julee Cruise, Smashing Pumpkins and Cindy Lee’s could intricately share.

Pushing the Screws, le premier album de m.j.suinat, sonne comme une conjuration de blessures emo – avec ses introspections parfois psychédéliques, ses mots de raison et ses constats doux-amers.
Le chant de m.j.suinat, sa guitare et ses mélodies rassemblent mélancolie, appréhension et gamberge, mais aussi une forme d’assurance que les choses iront malgré tout.
Les morceaux révèlent écoute après écoute de nouveaux détails distillés dans le mix, à l’image des émotions contradictoires mises en [chan]son. Tout en touchant des endroits fort vulnérables, les sons sont loin d’être naïfs, et se densifient avec des moments d’abstractions et de tension. La voix joue de son propre récit, adoucit, déraille… Puis se raréfie, quittant la narration pour le secret – aux questions succède un temps plus contemplatif, quoique bien agité.
Toute douceur devient épaisseur, s’étirant en questions réponses instrumentales de plus en plus imbriquées et cathartiques. Quelques éléments “pop” et légers sont les déclencheurs d’envolées distordues et saturées.
Ce qui pouvait sonner comme un réconfort presque candide devient trouble, des fantômes amplifiés et déformés par les riffs en vagues.
Pushing the Screws rejoue des sensations propres au grunge, à l’art-rock tirant vers le shoegaze, et aux chansons folk – sans ordre ni raison précise. Pour celleux qui aiment ce que Julee Cruise, Smashing Pumpkins et Cindy Lee peuvent avoir de complexe en commun.
